Sea ice features a dense inner pack ice zone surrounded by a marginal ice zone (MIZ) in which the sea ice properties are modified by interaction with the ice-free open ocean.

The marginal ice zone is the dynamic border between the open sea and the sea ice, which is ecologically extremely vulnerable. The phytoplankton present in the sea produces half of the oxygen on the planet. During spring, this zone is the most important CO2 sink in our biosphere. Ice–ocean–atmosphere dynamics in and around the marginal ice zone in the Beaufort Sea and Prudhoe Bay/Deadhorse areas, to characterize the processes that govern MIZ evolution from initial breakup to formation through the course of the summertime sea ice retreat.

Abstract During austral spring Antarctic sea ice extent (SIE) decreased at a record rate of 75 × km2 d−1, which was 46% faster than the mean rate and 18% faster than in any previous spring. Our survey across open water, the marginal ice zone and the pack-ice zone (Fig. 1) showed that krill larvae were abundant in the highly deformed and thicker sea-ice regions in both the pack-ice and the marginal ice zone (ice type 1, Fig. 2a,b and Supplementary Table 2).
